People suggest adding custom number format to add the parentheses, but you have to do that separately on each spreadsheet you open, which is hardly ideal.

I was having the same problem when I added Excel for Windows in a parallels virtual machine on the same Mac, but fortunately, I was able to correct it in control panel under the language and region settings.

The language and regions setting on Apple system preferences, doesnt give you any option for formatting negative numbers.

My region settings are set properly for United States so that isnt the problem.

Its been noted as a problem since Yosemite was launched back in October 2014.

I took your suggestion to open up an older spreadsheet where I had used Accounting and Parentheses.

Now I just have to remember to start new spreadsheets with this file.

What a pain. One bit of good news: I found that in these older spreadsheets the code for Accounting and Parentheses formatting is in the Custom dropdown list.

It is easily recognizable and can be used to quickly setup Accounting and Parentheses formatting when adding a new worksheet.
